Additional Info

Habitat: slopes and ridges of mountains, river valleys, and swamps

Wildlife value: Many birds feed on the seeds. Provides winter cover. Supports Imperial Moth larvae. In the Appalachia Mountains, wild boar eat the bark and soft outside wood of the roots.

Notes: Medium flammability. However, old trees are fire resistant due to thick bark. Pines are good companion plants for rhododendrons and azaleas (plant them at least 6-8 feet away). Leave the needles in place for an attractive natural mulch.
