Habitat: Moist thickets, along streams in sand or gravel bars, rocky slopes. Frequent to common in the mountains; infrequent to locally common in the piedmont; rare in the coastal Plain.

Wildlife Value: Attracts birds and bees

Notes: Papery bark continually molts in thin strips. Cascading form with beautiful white flowers in late spring. Attractive bark. Grows quickly in harsh conditions, ideal for erosion control on stream banks. Adaptable, disease resistant and drought tolerant.
