Habitat: Cove forests (both acidic and rich) and montane alluvial forests; occasionally in dry-mesic slope forests. Infrequent but sometimes locally common in the mountains, north to Augusta County; rare in the southwestern Piedmont (Pittsylvania County).

Wildlife Value: Attracts hummingbirds and butterflies.
