Additional Info

Habitat: Mesic to dry upland forests and well-drained floodplain forests; over most of the state, it occurs on a wide range of extremely acidic to strongly calcareous soils but is more restricted to the latter in the coastal Plain. Common in the mountains and piedmont; rare in the coastal Plain.

Wildlife Value: Nectar from flowers attracts butterflies, bees and other pollinators. Songbirds eat the seeds. Members of the genus Geranium support the following specialized bee: Andrena (Ptilandrena) distans. Tolerates damage by deer and rabbits.
