Habitat: Bogs, interdune swales and ponds, maritime swamps, sea-level fens, moist to wet clearings, ditches, low fields, and roadsides. Common in the coastal Plain and piedmont; very infrequent at low elevations in the mountains.

Wildlife: Provides an important source of food for songbirds, small mammals and game birds
