Mesic to dry upland forests and woodlands; usually in moderately to strongly base-rich soils. Common in the piedmont and lower mountains (except sw. Virginia); infrequent in the inner coastal Plain; rare in the outer coastal Plain.

Wildlife Value: Its flowers are attractive to bees and butterflies. The seeds are eaten by songbirds.
