Habitat: Rock outcrops, woodlands, and dry forests on mafic, calcareous, or shaley substrates; at higher elevations, it is more tolerant of nutrient-poor substrates and occurs in various forested and open habitats such as meadows. Common in the mountains; rare in the piedmont.

Wildlife value: In June to Aug. the nodding clusters of pink flowers appear and are attractive to pollinators.

Notes: Drought-tolerant once established and easy to grow. The plant will grow 1-2 feet tall with long grass-like foliage.
