In much the same habitats as the typical variety. Var. bicolor appears to be the most common and characteristic var. in the mountains and inner piedmont, ascending to >1200 m (4000 ft) elev., but also occasionally ranges into the outer piedmont and coastal Plain. However, apparent intergrades and specimens of ambiguous disposition (due in part to the seasonal factors mentioned above) confound the distributional picture.
