Well-drained floodplain forests, mesic to dry-mesic upland forests, and piedmont hardpan forests; occasionally in dry, rich woodlands and barrens on limestone, mafic rocks, or coastal shell deposits. Frequent in the piedmont; infrequent in the coastal Plain and mountains.
