Woodland sub-shrub. Dry or, occasionally, mesic, acidic forests and woodlands; usually associated with oaks, pines, and ericaceous shrubs. Common in the mountains; frequent in the piedmont; infrequent in the coastal Plain.
Wildlife value: Host plant to Hoary Elfin (Callophrys polia) butterfly. Birds will eat the seeds.
