Exposed to partly shaded cliffs, ledges, pavements, and talus of sandstone, quartzite, shale, granite, and other acidic rocks; somewhat anomalous populations occur on dry, cobbly terraces and stream banks formed in massive alluvial fans at the western foot of the Blue Ridge in Augusta County. Frequent in the mountains south from Augusta and Highland counties; rare in the piedmont.
