Well-drained floodplain forests, mesic and dry-mesic upland forests, and old fields; most characteristic of, but not restricted to, base-rich soils. Common throughout except in far sw. Virginia and on the Eastern Shore. Dormant in summer; foliage dies to the ground and does not reappear until the next spring

Wildlife Value: This plant attracts bees, pollinators, and mammals.

Edibility: Underground tubers have a sweet chestnut flavor
