In a wide range of mesic to dry forests and woodlands, in both acidic and base-rich soils. Common in the mountains; frequent in the n. and inner piedmont; rare elsewhere in the piedmont and in the coastal Plain, where it is generally restricted to sheltered, north-facing bluffs and ravines, often with calcareous soils.
