In a wide range of mesic to dry upland forests; often abundant on thin soils of bluffs and shaded outcrops; tolerant of a range of soil chemistries, occurring on extremely acidic to highly calcareous substrates. Common in the mountains; frequent in the piedmont; infrequent in the inner coastal Plain.
