The species occurs in a range of mesic to dry upland forests from the lowest elevations to about 1525 m (5000 ft). It is is common statewide, but the status of the three vars. has not been fully determined. Var. digitalis appears to be widespread in the mountains and piedmont; var. floridana is probably � restricted to the coastal Plain; and var. macropoda is probably restricted to lower elevations, perhaps primarily or exclusively east of the mountains.
