Mesic to dry upland forests, rocky woodlands, and well-drained alluvial forests; most characteristic of (but not restricted to) moderately to strongly base-rich soils. Common in the mountains and piedmont; infrequent in the coastal Plain (nearly absent in the outer coastal Plain).
