Additional Info

Habitat: Well-drained floodplain forests and mesic to dry upland forests; most abundant on (but not restricted to) base-rich soils; also in dry rocky woodlands over mafic and calcareous rocks. Common throughout Virginia.

Wildlife Value: Native bees seek out the nectar.

Edibility: The leaves and roots are edible.  The young shoots can be cooked and are a good substitute for asparagus. The roots can be eaten after being cooked.
