Shallow water and moss hummocks of forested, often rocky or gravelly seeps and seepage swamps. Frequent in the mountains and n. piedmont; infrequent in the s. piedmont and n. coastal Plain; rare in the s. coastal Plain; in the eastern part of the state, it is more restricted to habitats with calcareous soils.
