Mesic to rather dry upland forests and woodlands, well-drained floodplain forests, and high-elevation deciduous forests; most characteristic of moderately to strongly base-rich soils, at least at lower elevations and on drier sites; ascends to at least to 1400 m (4600 ft) elevation in the mountains. Frequent throughout.
