Well-drained floodplain forests, alluvial and seepage-swamp hummocks, mesic to dry-mesic (occasionally dry) upland forests, clearings, meadows, and old fields; most numerous on moderately to strongly base-rich soils. Common in the mountains and piedmont; frequent in the coastal Plain.
