Seepage swamps, seeps, rocky stream banks, calcareous and mafic fens, and bogs; most characteristic of wetlands on mafic and calcareous substrates but tolerates acidic, nutrient-poor soils at high elevations and occasionally elsewhere. Frequent in the mountains; infrequent to rare in the piedmont and coastal Plain.

Wildlife Value: Attracts hummingbirds and bees.
