Oligohaline to mesohaline (rarely freshwater) tidal marshes, salt scrub, and brackish interdune swales and ponds; also disjunct in extraordinarily rare inland salt marshes developed in seasonally flooded basins fed by saline springs at Saltville, Smyth County (Ridge and Valley province). Locally common in the estuarine and maritime zones of the coastal Plain, rare (but locally common at Saltville) in the sw. mountains.
