Rich and acidic cove forests, mesic to dry-mesic slope forests, rich boulder fields, coastal Plain shell-marl ravines; typically, but not exclusively, on base-rich substrates. Frequent in the mountains; infrequent in the inner piedmont; rare in the outer piedmont and coastal Plain.

Wildlife Value: The berries of Aralia spp. are eaten by woodland songbirds and some small mammals
