Mesic to dry forests, woodlands, and clearings, perhaps most common on base-rich substrates. Frequent in the mountains; rare in the inner and n. piedmont.

Wildlife Value: Attracts pollinators

Warning: Poisonous to humans. 
Severity: High
Poison Symptoms: Cardiac Arrest, nausea, vomiting, weakness, diarrhea. The milky sap from stems can cause blisters on skin.
