Habitat: Dry to mesic forests, rocky woodlands, barrens, old fields, and clearings; most characteristic of moderately to strongly base-rich soils. Common in the mountains and piedmont; infrequent in the coastal Plain.

Wildlife Value: Members of the genus Andropogon supports Common Wood-Nymph (Cercyonis pegala) larvae and various Skipper larvae. Adult Common Wood-Nymph butterflies feed on rotting fruit and flower nectar.
