Habitat: Dry woodlands and barrens on limestone, dolostone, mafic and ultramafic rocks, shale, and calcareous sandstone; more numerous in a variety of dry, open, disturbed habitats, including old fields, clearings, and roadsides. Frequent in the mountains and Piedmont; infrequent to rare in the Coastal Plain.
Wildlife Value: Members of the genus Agalinus support butterfly larvae and adults including Common Buckeye (Junonia coenia) larvae. Common Buckeye adult butterflies feed on flower nectar. Members of the genus Agalinis support specialized bees. Syrphid flies feed on pollen.
